US Cruze Diesel Engine’s Development Relies on GM’s European Engineers’ Expertise

General Motors has previously confirmed that the company is planning to produce a version of the Chevrolet Cruze powered by a diesel engine and this would be sold in the US automobile market. However, General Motors admitted that the company’s engineers and vehicle developers in the US may not be able to handle the development of a diesel engine that will be used on Cruze. Due to this, General Motors has decided to seek help from its European engineers.

According to General Motors, the development of the diesel engine that will propel the US version of the Cruze will be spearheaded by its diesel engineers based in Torino, Germany. These engineers will be supported by the company’s personnel or probably their counterparts from Pontiac, Michigan. The engineers from Opel who are currently based in Russelsheim, Germany will also be participating in this project by handling the development of the acoustic component, accessory drive, and other specialized components that will be used on the engine.

Through the collaboration of its American, German, and Italian engineers, General Motors is hoping that this project would be able to produce a reliable and dependable diesel engine that will be able to meet the expectations of most American car buyers. In addition to this, General Motors is also quite optimistic that the upcoming diesel engine would be capable of providing the impressive performance that the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and the newest 1.7-liter VCDi diesel engine that are used on the Cruzes sold in Europe and Australia.

Although General Motors has failed to reveal the specs and the perceived performance of the engine that the company is developing for the US Cruze, a lot of car experts believe that the figures that the engine would be providing are similar to what the existing 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and 1.7-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine are offering. The 2.0-liter version generates a maximum power output of up to 161 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 236 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm while the 1.7-liter version generates up to 130m horsepower.

Due to these anticipated features of the diesel-engine-powered Cruze, a lot of car experts are quite certain that this model will surely emerge as one of the most popular vehicle options in its class.
